Background: The link between ischemic stroke and inflammation has been heavily investigated. Cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-1, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and IL-6 appear to be commonly involved, The relation between the level of IL-1β and extension of brain damage in stroke patients is controversial.
Aim: To investigate the relation between Interleukin 1-β assay as well as (IL-1β) gene polymorphism and the infarct size in acute ischemic stroke patients.
Methods: Twenty five subjects with acute ischemic stroke compared to 25 healthy controls were subjected to clinical examination and laboratory investigations to measure the level of IL1b and its gene polymorphism.
Results: Elevated serum IL-1
