Abstract:

Osteosarcoma is a primary malignant mesenchymal tumor, often diagnosed in canines. The aim of this report is to describe the palliative approach used in a canine patient with osteosarcoma in the distal humerus and proximal radioulna. An 11-year-old Labrador canine was seen, diagnosed with arthrosis, treated with chondroitin, omega 3, and carprofen in acute crises. On physical/orthopedic examination, claudication of the forelimb limb, increased volume, crepitation and instability in the right humerus-radioulnar joint were identified. The radiographic examination showed periosteal reactions associated with bone proliferation in the distal humerus and proximal radioulna, inferring the diagnosis of pathological fracture. In the final needle aspirate biopsy, the presence of osteosarcoma in the region was confirmed. Therefore, in view of the decision made by the veterinarian and the tutor, palliative care therapy was started with the association of tramadol, gabapentin, dipyrone, carprofen, omega 3 and chondroitin, in addition to the use of a support orthosis for stability of the member. The same, responded well to palliative treatment. After about 5 months, the patient had acute pain and was administered mophine, partially responding to therapy. With the general clinical condition worsening, and the patient not having quality of life, it was decided to euthanize the animal. The use of associated systemic analgesics is aimed at quality at the end of a patient's life. It is indicated for patients with these neoplasms, as there is no curative treatment and these pathologies cause a significant painful condition.
