Abstract:

Objective: the objective of this study was to compare laboratory parameters of elderly individuals with and without hypovitaminosis D. Methods: this is an epidemiological, cross-sectional, analytical study, nested with a cohort of elderly residents in Aiquara-Bahia, Brazil. Of 231 elderly people, data were obtained: socioeconomic, health conditions, lifestyle, hematological, biochemical and hormonal exams. The data were analyzed in the SPSS, obtaining the frequencies and percentages of categorical variables and median blood parameters. The Mann Whitney U test was used to compare the medians. Results: in the group with hypovitaminosis D, women with low schooling, who were dependent on intermediate activities of daily living and with overweight / obesity prevailed. When comparing the laboratory parameters between the groups with and without hypovitaminosis, there were statistically significant differences (P <0.05) in the concentrations of TSH and total T4 that were higher in the elderly with hypovitaminosis D, and these had lower concentrations of hemoglobin, Total proteins, albumin and serum calcium. Conclusions: this study suggests the evaluation of the serum concentration of 25 (OH) 2 together with the determination of the routine laboratory parameters, which can improve the early diagnosis and the prevention of the aggravations characteristic of this age group, promoting the quality of life of the elderly.
