The effect of communicative language teaching (clt) through small group discussion on students’ reading comprehension and writing ability for senior high school

Abstract: 

The purpose of this research is to find out the significant effect of using CLT through Small Group Discussion on students’ reading and writing skills for Senior High School level in Kampar regency of Riau province..It was carried out by using a quasi-experimental design. The research participants were the tenth-grade students that consisted of 72 students divided into two classes, namely an experimental group and a control group. In the process of data collection, pre-test, post-test and observation were used. In analyzing the collected data, statistical analyses of descriptive and inferential statistics were used. The data were analyzed by using T-test of Independent sample t-test, a paired sample t-test and effect size formula. The research findings showed that there was a significant effect of using CLT through small group discussion on students’ reading comprehension and writing ability. The effect size of CLT on students’ reading comprehension was 89%, while on writing ability was 76%. In other words, there was a significant effect of using CLT through Small Group Discussion on the students’ reading and writing skills; and its effect size wascategorized into good. In conclusion, the use of CLT through Small Group Discussion could be implementedin teaching and learning of reading and writing skills for senior high school level in Kampar regency.
