Abstract:

Introduction: Infant mortality is death in children under the age of one year, including neonatal (up to 27 days) and post-neonatal (from 28 to 364 days) mortality, and is so important that it is among the goals of the Organization's Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. Objective: The study aimed to understand the main causes of infant mortality in the Northern region of Brazil. Materials and Methods: This is an observational and qualitative study with ecological data collection, with qualitative data analysis, being a survey of data collected in the public databases of the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS) originating from the Health System Mortality Information. The target population was all cases of infant deaths registered in the SIM, during the period from 2015 to 2019, in the Northern region of Brazil. Results: The analysis resulted in 24,133 deaths in children under one year of age registered in the SIM in this period, and the main causes of infant mortality in the region were, respectively, conditions originating in the perinatal period, congenital malformations, chromosomal deformities and anomalies, respiratory diseases, external causes of morbidity and mortality, and septicemia. Conclusion: Reducing IM rates is a major challenge, as it demands, changes in social, promotion and demographic conditions. Health actions that promote quality care according to the needs of each population are needed.
