Nutritional status of schoolchildren from municipal schools in a city of Sao Paulo, Brazil

A cross-sectional study was carried out to evaluate the nutritional status of schoolchildren aged 6 to 10 years enrolled in municipal schools in Carapicuiba in 2014. The anthropometric evaluation was performed by weight and height and the classification of the nutritional status by height-for-age, weight for age and body mass index for age expressed in Z-score, compared to the reference values recommended by the World Health Organization.

Supplementation with vitamin d associated to the exercise alters differently to the morphology of the brown adipose tissue in lean and obese rats

Here was evaluated the effect of chronic VD supplementation associated or not to exercise on fat accumulation in Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT) from lean and obese male rats. Obesity was induced by administration of monosodium glutamate (MSG; 4g/Kg). Control (CON) received saline. At 30th day, MSG and CON rats were weaned and subdivided in VD supplemented (12µg/Kg) or non-supplemented (NS), Exercised (E) or Sedentary (S). At 86 days of life, the rats were euthanized and white adipose tissue (WAT) and BAT depots weighted. The BAT was submitted to histological analyses.

Hypertension is multifactorial!

Background: Hypertension has been, worldwide, considered a multifactorial disease. This study aims to prove the multifactorial of hypertension and suggest a new line of research on improving stratification scores for risk identification for high blood pressure. Methods: This is a quantitative, an observational cross-sectional, descriptive and experimental.

Ethno-pharmacological studies of brazilian caatinga plants: A review

This study aimed to review the results of scientific papers on the main ethno-pharmacological studies carried out with species from the Brazilian Caatinga Region. We searched the electronic databases: SciELO, PubMed, LILACS and CAPES. The period of time was defined as 10 years, having as key words: hypoglycemic, vegetable (extract), phytotherapic and biotechnological potential. The Caatinga is one of the main Brazilian biomes. It represents considerable plant diversity and has numerous species used by the population for many purposes.

Perspectives of parturient hemoglobinuria (pph) in buffaloes

PPH is a sporadic phosphorous deficiency metabolic disorder affecting adult buffaloes around the world both during advanced pregnancy and post partum period. Feeding of cruciferous plants, sugar cane tops, sugar beets exacerbate phosphorous deficiency either due to their low phosphorous content or an account of certain inhibitor factors that prevent proper absorption of dietary phosphorous. The serum phosphorous levels in affected buffaloes are as low as 0.9 mg/dl and usually half of the normal (5.0 mg/dl) values.

Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antitumor activities of aqueous ethanolic extract of the golden oyster mushroom pleurotus citrinopileatus (fr.) singer

Pleurotus citrinopileatus, an excellently edible mushroom, was examined for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antitumor activities. The aqueous ethanolic extract of the mushroom was used for the study. The mushroom possessed profound antioxidant activity as evidenced from its ability to scavenge DPPH., ABTS.+, hydroxyl and nitric oxide radicals. The extract also reduced ferric ions into ferrous ions and prevented ROS induced lipid peroxidation to a significant level. Anti-inflammatory and antitumor properties of this mushroom was tested on Swiss albino mice model.

Development of starch based edible films

The present study was conducted with an objective to standardize the formulation and process protocol for the development of starch based biodegradable antimicrobial films for the extension of shelf-life of food and food products. The processing technology of starch edible films was optimized using response surface methodology with different levels of starch (4%, 5%, 6% w/v) incorporated with 0.3% level of Sodium alginate and 5% of glycerol at drying temperature 35⁰C. The starch level was standardized as 6% on the basis of biochemical characteristics viz.

Design and implementation of mlearning for calculus in tertiary education

Using IT in education has become prevalent worldwide. It is believed that IT not only motivates students to learn in class, but also encourages students to take the initiative to explore and inquire subject matters outside classroom by themselves (i.e. independent learning). The Hong Kong Education Bureau offered a series of professional development programmes to principals, vice principals, middle managers as well as teachers who have joined the "Support Scheme for e-Learning in Schools" since April 2014 to 2016/17 school year to further equip schools to implement e-learning.

The bee community of ilha das flores, babitonga bay, santa catarina state, Brazil

This study carried out a survey of native bee species and their floral resources at Ilha das Flores, an island located in the Babitonga Bay, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. Specimens were captured with entomological nets, pantraps and aromatic baits. A total of 1,120 individual bees, representing 60 species distributed in four families and 47 plant species of 24 families, was sampled. Buzz-pollination by Centridini, Xylocopini and Bombini on Fabaceae plants, specific interaction between Emphorini and Convovulaceae and illegitimate visits were observed. Seasonal nesting was noticed.
