The theory of humours revisited

The Humoral Theory held sway for more than two thousand years, as it offered a rational and understandable model for the workings of the human body in both health and disease. It incorporated the concepts of the elements (fire, water, air, and earth) and the qualities (heat, coldness, moistness and dryness) which offered a viable explanation of both the microcosm (the body) and the microcosm (the environment). It also merged with the constructs related to the person’s temperament and lifestyle, and offered valuable clinical support in diagnosis, treatment, and recuperation.

Implementation of wood structure engineering policy in Indonesia

In wooden buildings, the collapse is generally due to connections or relationship that does not meet the standards. And structural system is not earthquake resistant. Wood Regulation in Indonesia is very outdated, since 1961 Indonesian Wooden Regulation (PKKI 1961) 52 years has not changed. Several draft wood regulations of 1980 and 2002 were made until the issuance of SNI 7973: 2013 Design specifications for timber construction. Currently, the regulations abroad use both Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD), and Alowable Stress Design (ASD) design methods, Breyer 2008.

Review on various noise models and image restoration techniques

Image restoration is field of digital image processing that includes techniques used to reconstruct an original image scene from degraded quality images. Blur & noise are two main degradations by which the quality image gets ruined. The goal of this paper is to give overview of image restoration techniques to readers, who is just beginning in this field of image restoration. The task of developing restoration algorithms is quite difficult, since the information should not be destroyed during image restoration.

Assessment of metal contamination using single and integrated pollution indices in soil samples of Nashik District, India

Like water and air, soil is essential for growing vegetation and afforestation. Pollution of soil leads to contamination of vegetation and also of the nearby water reservoirs making it unhealthy for the human consumption. Heavy metal contamination of soil has been observed since years due to rapid industrialization, transportation and dumping of garbage at dumping sites. Pollution indices act as a powerful tool for assessing the extent of soil pollution. In this study, soil samples were collected from five different locations of Nashik district.

Reduction of phytotoxicity of organic compost

The Brazilian legislation for organic compost type A allows a maximum of 50% moisture for commercialization. Thus, the use of dryers may be an alternative to reach this percentage. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the continuous dryer on physical-chemical, microbiological and phytotoxicological characteristics of organic compost. The compost was elaborated with sludge from a poultry and pork slaughtering treatment plant and sawdust. Continuous counter-flow cylindrical dryer was used, with collections before, during and after the dryer.
