Beyond the MDGS: Inclusion, participation and the reality of gender development in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)

Theoretical advancements in gender-related literature has witnessed discursive shifts. Chronologically on a global level, gender theorising has advanced from the welfare approach (WA), women in development (WID), gender and development (GAD), women and development (WAD), the efficiency approach, empowerment approach, the gender and environment (GED) approach and subsequently Gender Mainstreaming. These theoretical advancements have been further strengthened by the recently concluded Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) framework and the soon to start Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Prisoners’ criminal thinking and perceptions on quality of life in prison as correlated with depression: The case of Jimma zone correctional center

This study relies on assessing of prisoners’ criminal thinking, perceptions of quality of their life in prison and their level of depression. It was carried out in Jimma Zone Correctional Center (JZCC). Out of 741 prisoners 253 were recruited by the sample size estimation formula. Regarding length of time they spent in prison, they were categorized into 56 short term prisoners and 197 long-term prisoners.

An economic valuation of managed roundwood in the Region of Marajó, in the sState of Pará

The aim of this study is to estimate the economic value and marketing margins of round wood from managed areas. A positive economic value indicates economic viability of the activity. Besides generating a positive margin, in the case of this supply chain, the values are relatively higher than those generated by competing agricultural activities that are contributing to Amazonian deforestation. This result leads to the restructuring of the forest industry, by integrating the portfolios of decision makers and agencies.

Seafood export processing sector in Kerala – Issues and challenges

The fishing industry not only acts as foreign exchange earner but also plays an important role in Kerala economy. This study analyses the issues of seafood processing export industry and examines the state’s position in the international market. The study employs, non-parametric tests, Kruskal Wallis H Statistic test to rank the various problems faced by the seafood export processing surveyed units. The success of fish and fishery export processing industry can be achieved by minimizing the cost of production and improving the quality standards to attain higher economies of scale.

Evaluating a peer mentoring programme for hard-to-reach youth

Peer mentoring is widely used in counselling, guidance, and vocational, socio-psychological support for young people at risk involving one-to-one structured interaction with another young individual. The ‘Young People’s Program’ is a preventative intervention project designed to provide learning and thinking skills in young people in order to develop social awareness, interpersonal skills and increase their chances of employability. The article outlines the program set-up, selection of participants, including the program’s challenges, outcomes and impact on those involved.

Strengthening capacity building for disaster management in taraba state: A panacea for sustainable development

Disaster occurs almost every day and managing these disasters when they occur has been very challenging. Africa is one of the regions most affected by man-made and natural disasters and with the least capacity to cope with disaster management. This paper examines the challenges of disaster management and how to strengthen capacity building of stakeholders particularly the local communities to be better prepared for disasters when they occur.

This paper evaluates the effect of conflict on gender roles in agricultural production in post conflict period 2006-2013, in Greater Gulu, Uganda. In recent years governments in many parts of the world have been attaching importance to gender issues. The Agricultural sector has been confirmed by numerous studies to be the backbone of almost all the economies in the sub-Saharan region. The study utilized the Longitudinal Survey Research Design; the target population is former Internally Displaced Persons.

Study of marriage related attitude of degree holder girls in Nagpur District- A sociological study

Education play an important role in the socialization process of man. The effective educational environment boost the personality development. In Indian society, girls kept on secondary place on different areas. This article focus on contents related to girls education. It also includes and takes reviews about the problems in education process. The attitude and awareness about marriage among the degree holder of girl students is the center area of this article. Data has been collected from girl students who are having the degree in different stream.

The role of human rights with context to India

Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status. We are all equally entitled to our human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent and indivisible. Human rights are natural rights which awarded to every individual. Universal human rights are often expressed and guaranteed by law, in the forms of treaties, customary international law, general principles and other sources of international law.

Students’ awareness and their use of African virtual university open courseware: A case of the Open University of Tanzania
