Phase 1 trial of autologous bone marrow stem cell transplantation in patients with spinal cord injury

Introduction: A total of 18 patients, with complete motor deficits and paraplegia caused by thoracic and lumbar spine trauma without muscle atrophy or psychiatric problems, were included into this study. Materials and Methods: The bone marrow was aspirated from the anterior iliac crest under local anesthesia and the mononuclear fraction was isolated by density gradient method. At least 750 million mononuclear-enriched cells, suspended in 2 mL of saline, were infused intrathecally.

Immune responses against autointracellular pathogenic genomes or cancered cells

Cancer, also termed malignancy is a disease characterized by an uncontrolled growth of cells, i.e., an abnormal growth of immortal cells with no apoptosis. More than 100 types of cancer are known, including breast cancer, skin cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, and lymphoma. What makes a cell a cancered one is the autointracellular pathogenic genome, or “cancerous genome” located inside that cancered cell.

"Supraorbital margin osteoma”: a rare case report

This study aimed to present a prototype system to assist the scientific police to identify criminals. This is a descriptive applied research, with a qualitative approach using the hypothetical-deductive method; developed during the specialization course in Criminal Forensics, in Brazil. The subjects of the study to form the database were extracted from documents published by the Department of Public Safety.

Weight gain and metabolic changes in obese mice fed with lyophilisedpitaia (hylocereus undatus)

The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of white pitaya (Hylocereus undatus) lyophilised in mice fed with high-fat diet to induce obesity. The animals were divided in groups (n=10), fed with control diet (C1), high-fat diet (C2), high-fat diet with lyophilised white pitaya at 2% (P2) and 4% (P4) during 12 weeks. It was calculated weight gain, food consumption and Feed Efficiency Ration (FER). The glucose tolerance test was performed. The histology of the liver and epididymal adipose tissue were analyzed.

Comment on selenium supplementation in Brazilian cardiac patients

Background: Selenium is an essential element for human health, possessing antioxidant role and present in several selenoproteins. Objective: This manuscript aims to make a commentary from the survey of the mortality rate of cardiac patients in the last years and to evaluate the decision making of studies on the intake of selenium in Brazilian cardiac patients. Methods: We searched Medline, Pubmed, and SciELO for studies evaluating selenium and cardiovascular outcomes in patients.

Wellens’ syndrome: a case report

Wellens’ syndrome is a condition in which electrocardiographic (ECG) changes indicate critical proximal left anterior descending artery (LAD) narrowing occurring during the chest pain-free period. Due to the severity of the obstruction, if such cases are managed by early invasive revascularisation therapy, a major threat in the form of a massive myocardial infarction or sudden death may be averted. We report the case of a 56-year-old patient admitted to an emergency department, because of a thoracic pain suspicious for angina pectoris.

Osteomyelosclerosis: A Rare Presentation Of Myeloproliferative Neoplasm: A Rare Case Report And Review Of Literature

Primary myelofibrosis (PMF) is a chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) characterised by neoplastic megakaryocytic proliferation and extensive marrow fibrosis. Rarely in later stages, the bone marrow is replaced by calcified connective tissue referred to as osteomyelosclerosis, but it is seldom seen at presentation. Leukemic transformation in PMF is frequently seen in later stages of primary myelofibrosis and is associated with a dismal prognosis.

Number Of Follicles At The Time Of Trigger And Mean Number Of Oocytes Retrieved: A Correlation Of Amh With Age, Mean Retrospective Study

Introduction: For assisted reproductive technology [ART] to be successful, patients should be evaluated and correct ART should be selected. The ovary reserve is associated with oocyte quality and yield, it represents the reproductive potential of women. While various method are available to assess ovarian reserve, few methods are currently available to assess oocyte quality. The anti-mullerian hormone [AMH] is a member of transforming growth factor beta family.
