Occurrence of antibiotic resistant enteric Escherichia coli in marketed chicken in Ibadan metropolis, Southwest Nigeria

In most developing countries including Nigeria, indiscriminate use of antibiotics in food animals could be incriminated as a critical factor leading to antimicrobial resistance. Intestines from marketed chicken in fifteen market locations in Ibadan metropolis were randomly sampled to examine for antibiotic resistant enteric bacteria to some commonly used antibiotics. Bacteriological examination of intestinal samples was done using standard methods, followed by in-vitro antibiotic sensitivity test by agar gel diffusion technique.

8-Hydroxydeoxyguanosine in transitional bladder carcinoma

Objectives: As oxidative stress is known to be associated with the development of cancer, we investigated whether the tissue expression of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) which is a marker of DNA damage were increased in patients with transitional bladder carcinoma (TBC).
Design and Methods: Fifty patients with transitional bladder carcinoma (TBC) and 18 age-matched cancer –free patients were involved in this study. 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) in tissue were examined by immunohistochemistry (IHC).

Epidemiology of unnatural death due to suspected poisoning in women in Varanasi, India

Introduction: Unnatural deaths due to suspected poisoning in women have a serious psychological and social impact on the family and community. Sections 284, 299, 300, 304A, 324,326 and 328 of IPC deal with offences relating to the handling and administration of Poisonous substances. Aims and Objective: To find out how death due to suspected poisoning affects incidence, age, sex, habitat, marital status, religion, manner of death, medico legal consequence and preventive measures.

Antibacterial activity of papain against Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175

Papain is an enzyme extracted from papaya plants (Carica papaya L), including Caricaceae family. This enzyme shows a broad proteolytic activity against the protein, short chain peptides, amino acid ester and amid, including bacterial cell wall. The purpose of this study is to produce a proper papain concentration to inhibit the growth of or kill Streptococcus mutans. The type of research is an experimental laboratory by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) with a dilution method, and measured using a microplate reader.

Adolescent health in India and development implications

Constituting more than one fifth of the country’s population, adolescents in India, as a group, have not yet received the deserved attention. This paper examines the health status of adolescents in India based on existing studies and highlights the implications for development of adolescents as well as for national development. It has a special focus on some of the neglected aspects of adolescent health: nutritional situation, substance use and mental health.

Quality of semen collected by transrectal massage in bulls restrained in the presence of a cow

The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effect of PGF and GnRH treatment and exposure of bulls to estrus-cows on semen quality collected by transrectal massage. Three fertile, pure Frisian bulls, 2-3 years old, were followed up weekly for four periods of treatment (control, exposure to estrus-cows, PGF and GnRH). The bulls exposure to a cow in estrus showed high semen volume (3.3±1.3 ml), percentage of progressive motility of sperm (73.3±12.0 %; P<0.05) and sperm concentration (996.6±141.6×106/ml; P<0.05) compared to other treatments.

Preeclampsia in the third tremestre in gestational diabetes

Preeclampsia is concidered as one of the most important patologies in the third trimester of pregnancy and with major complications in this period as well. At the same time the values of diabetes or gestacional diabetes in general and prediabetit are increasing. This study aims to highlight the corelation between severe preeclampsia and glycaemia values. This is a prospective study including 5112 pregnant patients randomly presented in DRH for routine assesment or labour from 2012 to december 2012.

Oral health and diabetes mellitus-review

Many medical illnesses have taken a toll on human lives. Of these diabetes has been an aggravating and aggressive one. It affects entire body where oral health is also disturbed. Oral picture is full of gingival, periodontal problems, bone lesions and blood disorders. The dentist uses his skill and knowledge to help such patients in society. The aim of this review is to throw light on problems that can be easily diagnosed and treated if oral care is thoroughly sought and rendered.

Swarm intelligence algorithm for cancer treating nanorobots: a review

Nanorobots are future in-vivo surgeons that will locomote in human vascular system manoeuvring their specific medical task such as identifying and destroying cancer cells, repairing tissues, clinical trials and so on. Since, they are expected to carry out complex tasks with their simple designs; they need a swarm intelligence system, that will ensure their collaboration, biocompatibility of these nanorobots as well as ability to adapt in dynamic environment in human body. Many Swarm Algorithms have been suggested so far for nanorobot functioning invivo.
