Food and nutritional security in north east India- Some contemporary issues

North Eastern Region comprises eight States of Indian Territory consisting of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura which have been gifted by the nature with tremendous biodiversity and widely varying agro-climatic condition forming 8% of the total land area and about 4% of total population of the country. More than 70 percent of total geographical area of NER is covered by hills and about 3 million hectare is estimated to be under soil erosion hazard as a result of practice of jhum cultivation.

Women entrepreneurs in India - emerging issues and challenges

Women entrepreneurship is gaining importance in India in the wake of economic liberalization and globalization. The policy and institutional framework for developing entrepreneurial skills, providing vocation education and training has widened the horizon for economic empowerment of women. However, women constitute only one third of the economic enterprises. There exist a plethora of successful business women entrepreneurs both in social and economic fields in India. They are performing well.

Impact of mgnrega on local development: a study of ottapidaram blocks in Thoothukudi District, Tamil nadu

The Mahatma Gandhi National Employment Guarantee Act of the UPA government in India was introduced primarily to enhance the livelihood of households by providing 100 days of employment in development works. An analyze of the data for Ottapidaram block of Thoothukudi district has revealed that the scheme was able to provide only 26 days of employment in a year on average. Moreover the average earnings by each person did not exceed Rs.2000 per year.

Inequality of opportunity across the social groups in India

Caste is the most meaningful way of classification of Indian population. The family background across the social groups defined by caste is sharply different. The reason behind this disparity is that this way of classification of the society was initially introduced on the basis of occupation. The members of the so called disadvantaged social groups were concentrated at the bottom of occupational hierarchy and the contrary is true for the members of the advantaged social groups. Till this date this type of deprivation is not totally disappeared.

Self Help Group and social empowerment:an impact assessement in the selected villages of Coimbatore district

The present study was attempted to examine whether there is improvement in the status of women whom are members of SHG.  The study attempted to examine this with of help of 190 women sample respondents selected at random from 34 villages of seven taluks, Coimbatore District.  The primary data collected from the sample respondents indicated that the status of women has improved after becoming member of SHG group.  The awareness of the sample respondents in terms of various factors including, family politics has also improved.

The chithirai festival in sri varagunapandeeswarar temple at radhapuram a historical study

India is a subcontinent, noted for numerous festivals in all parts of the country, celebrated every now and then. This study provides evidential information that human relation and religious harmony are maintained, as the people of different castes and communities, religions and languages join hands in the celebration of Chithirai festival, accepting the doctrine Love is God. Celebrating the festival, the people of Radhapuram and those in the surrounding hamlets pay their sense of reverential gratitude to their deities.

Exploring the relative relevance of home environment and teaching aptitude of b.ed trainee teachers

The present study is concerned in exploring the relative relevance of Home environment and Teaching aptitude of B.Ed trainee teachers of Union Territory of Pondicherry. The sample consisted of 805 B.Ed trainee teachers and the investigator adopted the survey method. The finding reveals that there is significant difference between male and female, married and unmarried trainee teachers in their nature of Home environment.

A study of human conflict among graduate teachers and post graduate teachers

A study has been conducted on 200 teachers of which 62 are men and 138 are women from 15 different schools in Chidambaram Taluk, to find the level of factors responsible for human conflict (caste, religion, economical factors and government policies). It is found that the graduate teachers and post graduate teachers significantly differ in respect of caste and religion and they do not significantly differ in respect of economical factors and government policies.

Effect of mercury on carbohydrate metabolism of sphaerodema rusticum (heteroptera: belastomatidae)

In the present study Sphaerodema rusticum were exposed to sublethal concentration of mercury. The key enzymes of the anaerobic glucose metabolism (Succinate dehydrogenase ,and Lactate dehydrogenase) activity were observed in testis and seminal vesicle of Sphaerodema rusticum . During the Sublethal concentration of mercury contamination, the Succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) and Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were altered. The present study showed that these changes suggest that the activity of enzymes is modified by a change in ambient water.
