Background: Several studies have evaluated the importance of the recovery of adults and children in cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. Moreover, little is known about the plasma concentration of Selenium of the Brazilian children's population in the pre-, intra- and post-operatory with cardiopulmonary bypass. Objective: To evaluate the current Brazilian literature on cardiac surgeries in children with cardiopulmonary bypass that addresses the damage caused by oxidative stress and its relation with plasma concentration of selenium.

Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) is a rare autosomal dominant disease, caused by heterozygous mutation in the type I activin receptor gene on chromosome 2q24 that, due to instability, causes progressive ectopic ossification. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the characteristics of 31 patients with FOP from different regions of Brazil. Some characteristics include current age, flare ups, disease progression, hallux characteristics, diagnosis, ectopic ossification sites, and symptoms of cramps, temporomandibular joint, dental conditions and previous surgeries.

Oro-antral communication and fistulas are commonly encountered complications in upper premolar and molar regions. A total of 307 articles were screened after conducting a literature search on Pubmed, of which 41 were selected and reviewed. Various treatment modalities used for the correction of OAC/OAF were evaluated for their effectiveness and long term results. We concluded that the treatment modality is dependent on many factors and should be used judiciously whenever required. Through this paper, we present the above review and report of two cases, managed at our department.

Background/Aims: Sarcopenia has recently been drawing attention as a factor related to the prognosis of life and quality of life of chronic liver disease. Diagnosis through muscle mass evaluation is typically performed using reference values for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) from the Asia Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS). On the other hand, consensus has not been obtained for the cut-off value of normal value in the computed tomography (CT) measurement method to be obtained from the area of the skeletal muscle or the psoas muscle.

The pregnancy-puerperal cycle is understood from the fertilization to the end of the puerperium. In this period, woman requires differentiated and individualized care in order to achieve a physiological pregnancy, delivery and postpartum. However, puerperal infection still remains a major public health problem, evidenced by its high prevalence of morbidity and lethality. The objective was to review and discuss the studies on puerperal infection published in the period from 2010 to 2015. A systematic literature review was developed.

Objective: Analyze the association between sociodemographic characteristics of the elderly and types of violence. Methods: We conducted an analytical-descriptive study with a cross-sectional design. The data were obtained from the National System of Notifications of Diseases made available by the Epidemiological Surveillance of the Municipality of Vitória da Conquista, Bahia, Brazil, and refer to the period from 2012 to 2015. Results: we found 55 cases of elderly people who suffered violence. Most of the victims were female (90.9%), married (38.2%).

Pregnancy and childbirth are moments inherent to the female life cycle, constituting a physiological process when the woman needs to be the protagonist. Obstetric violence (OV) is a practice that violates human rights and creates biopsychosocial damages. The objective was to discuss the studies on obstetric violence, including verbal aggression, published in the period from 2011 to 2016. A systematic review of the literature was developed. For the search in the Virtual Health Library, we consulted the Descriptors: violence against women; childbirth; woman.

Objective: to analyze scientific publications about the relation between hypovitaminosis D and Diabetes Mellitustype 1 (DM1). Method: Integrative literature review, using the descriptors "Type 1 diabetes mellitus/diabetes mellitus tipo 1" and "vitamin D deficiency/deficiência de vitamina D" connected by the Boolean operator AND in the Pubmed, Lilacs and SciElo databases. Papers published between 2010-2017 was included, available in their entirety in Portuguese, Spanish and English, and the ones that answer this study main question.

After three decades since the first reports of the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), resulting from the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection, the detection rate of pregnant women with HIV has been increasing in the last ten years. Investing in actions aimed at disseminating information on obstetric approach in pregnant women living with HIV/AIDS is necessary to guarantee the reduction of vertical transmission, considered the main mechanism of acquiring HIV in pediatrics.

Aims/purpose: Adolescents are a rich human resource and an important part of the development process.
